Lately, there has been a lot of fear about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and what it might mean for people receiving Social Security Disability benefits. Some are worried that their payments will stop, that major changes will make it harder to qualify, or that they’ll have to jump through impossible hoops to prove they still deserve benefits. If you’ve heard these concerns, take a deep breath—there is no reason to panic. While the government is always making adjustments, there is no evidence that DOGE is eliminating disability benefits or cutting off payments to those who need them.
What Changes Might Happen?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently updated its identity verification rules. People applying for SSDI, Medicare, or SSI who can’t verify their identity online can now complete their applications entirely by phone. They do NOT have to go to an SSA office in person. This makes it easier for many people to continue their claims without dealing with long lines or office visits. However, people applying for retirement, spousal, or survivor benefits may still need to visit an office unless they qualify for an exemption.
Another change is to the SSA’s overpayment recovery policy. If the SSA says you have been overpaid, they can now withhold your full monthly benefit to recover the amount, not just 10% like before. If this happens and you cannot afford to lose your whole check, you can ask the SSA for relief or appeal the decision.
Despite these updates, if you are already approved for Social Security Disability, you should still get your payments on time. There is no plan to stop or eliminate SSDI or SSI benefits. Changes focus on ensuring the SSA runs more efficiently, not cutting benefits for people who need them.
What to Expect in the Short Term
The biggest immediate effect is likely to be longer wait times. Some people are panicking and rushing to SSA offices, causing backups. If you need to apply for benefits or have questions, it may take longer to get an appointment or reach someone by phone. Using online services can help you avoid long waits.
If you are receiving benefits now, your payments will continue. There is no evidence that checks will be eliminated. While SSA offices may be busier, and overpayment collections may be stricter, your benefits should remain secure.
