It’s Faster to Start a Claim Over the Phone

August 18, 2024

There are multiple ways to start your claim, so choosing the most efficient method is essential. One surprisingly fast way is to start your claim over the phone by calling SSA at 1-800-772-1213. Here’s why.

Why You Shouldn’t Do It Online

Filing an initial Social Security Disability claim online involves filling out a 23-page form. This form requires detailed information, such as your employment history, medical history, and personal details. Gathering all this information can be challenging and time-consuming. There will be questions on it that will halt the process. Although the online form seems convenient, many people struggle with it.

To give you a quick idea about what it entails, pages 1-3 ask for emergency contacts, which, while optional, are highly recommended. The rest of the form (pages 4-23) includes critical questions for your application. You must provide information about your medical conditions, work history, education, and family details. Completing this form typically takes 1-3 hours, depending on how much information you have readily available.

If you cannot complete it in one sitting, there are options to save your progress, but it’s still a lengthy process. Missing any required information can delay your claim. In our experience, we have represented clients who started the application and didn’t finish it because something interrupted them. Or maybe they weren’t sure how to answer a question and decided not to continue it.

The Benefits of Going In-Person

Another option for starting your claim is going to your local Social Security office in person. You’ll benefit from interacting with a Social Security representative who can help guide you through the process. They can answer questions in real time. One of the most significant benefits is that the representative will work with you to complete your paperwork. It reduces the chances of errors, but if you don’t know something, they will move past it. Any omitted information can be discussed during the next meeting,

Furthermore, being in person allows the representative to verify non-medical eligibility requirements. This includes verifying your age, employment history, and marital status. By handling these steps immediately, you can avoid potential delays.

The Advantages of Starting a Claim Over the Phone

Starting your claim over the phone offers a balanced approach. To get started with your claim, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. You can save time by cutting your interview time in half compared to starting an online application. Though you will probably be on hold for a little while, it will be worth your time. When you begin your claim over the phone, a representative will gather your essential information directly. This can be completed in about 10-15 minutes.

The phone representative can provide prompts and clarification, making the process smoother. They also can schedule longer appointments if more detailed information is needed. Most disability claims go through local SSA field offices and state agencies, known as Disability Determination Services (DDS). The field office verifies non-medical eligibility requirements and sends the case to the DDS for medical evaluation. Starting your claim with the field office over the phone streamlines this initial verification process.

Starting your Social Security Disability claim over the phone is a faster and more efficient method. It combines the thoroughness of in-person assistance with the convenience of not having to fill out lengthy forms independently.
