Executive Summary: SSDI cases often get closed due to missed deadlines, unreturned forms, or unanswered calls. SSA will usually allow some flexibility on deadlines, but ignoring requests entirely can result in the termination of your case. Stay organized, return forms quickly, keep your phone open for calls, and update your contact info. Timing matters as much as medical records in getting approved for disability benefits.
When you’re applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), one of the most important things you can do is pay attention to deadlines. Missing a single step like a form or a phone call can stop your entire case. It doesn’t matter how strong your medical records are or how serious your health problems are. If Social Security doesn’t hear from you when they need to, they can close your case without ever making a decision.
Why Deadlines Matter More Than You Think
Social Security has a reputation for being slow to process claims. But that doesn’t mean you can be. When they send you a letter asking for something like a work history report or a function report, it usually comes with a deadline. And sometimes, that deadline seems tight. We’ve seen people receive a letter on the 13th with a due date listed as the 18th. That can feel impossible.
But here’s the thing: SSA usually allows a little extra time. If they get the document a few days after the deadline printed on the letter, they’ll often still accept it. That said, waiting too long or ignoring the request entirely can lead to your case being marked as “non-cooperative” and closed out. It happens more often than you think.
We’ve seen people lose their cases simply because they didn’t return a basic work history form. They thought they’d get to it later. But later never came. And now their case, which had a strong chance of approval, is closed.
What You Need to Do to Stay on Track
If SSA sends you something, fill it out and return it right away. Don’t wait until the last day. The sooner you get it done, the less you have to worry about lost mail, delivery delays, or confusion.
Also, keep your phone on. If SSA calls and they can’t reach you, they may move forward without your input or worse, close the case for lack of cooperation. Check your voicemail. Turn off any automatic spam blockers that may prevent calls from being received. If you change your phone number, please notify Social Security immediately.
When the SSA calls, they usually have quick questions. They might need to update your medical records or clarify something on your work history. These are simple things, but if you miss the call and they can’t reach you again, you may not get another chance.
This is not something your lawyer can handle for you. The truth is, the SSA needs direct answers, and calling them back after they’ve already reached out is nearly impossible. Their examiners are handling hundreds of cases. If you miss your shot to talk to them, that might be the only one you get.
Your Case Is Important. Don’t Let Timing Derail It
Missing a form or a phone call can feel small. But in an SSDI case, it’s not. Your application can be strong. You can meet every requirement. But if SSA doesn’t get what they need from you, the case may never reach a decision.
That’s why we tell our clients to treat every letter, every call, and every form like it matters—because it does. If you’re organized and responsive, you improve your chances of approval. No one can promise a win, but we can promise that missed deadlines are one of the most common reasons cases get closed.
