Because SSDI is important for individuals and families, we are breaking down the essential information you need to know to qualify for disability. The role your previous employment plays in the SSDI process can be the difference between approval and denial. It’s crucial to grasp the significance of accurately documenting your work experience.

What the Social Security Administration Looks For 

When applying for SSDI, the Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates your work history to determine eligibility. This process involves reviewing your jobs in the last 15 years. They will assess if you can still perform your past work despite your disability. The SSA categorizes work into different levels, such as heavy, medium, light, and sedentary. If your disability limits you to less than sedentary work, you may qualify for SSDI. 

Jobs outside the 15-year window are not considered, as the SSA assumes your skills may no longer be relevant. The money you earn from these jobs must meet specific thresholds to qualify as substantial. This assessment ensures that only significant employment is taken into account. Learning the job well enough to perform it competently is also a requirement for a job to be considered past relevant work. This scrutiny of your work history is their way of understanding the full scope of your capabilities and limitations in the workplace.

Your past work is considered relevant if it meets three criteria:

  1. It occurred within the last 15 years
  2. it was a substantial gainful activity (SGA)
  3. You held the job long enough to learn it. 

The SSA uses form SSA-3369, a work history report, to gather information about your previous jobs. It asks for your job’s duties, the skills required to perform it, and each position’s physical and mental demands. Accurately detailing this information is pivotal for the SSA to understand the nature of your previous employment. 

How To Complete the Process

Completing the SSA-3369 form accurately is crucial for your SSDI application. You must detail every job held in the 15 years before your disability, including the nature of the work, the equipment used, and the physical and mental tasks involved. Be specific about the requirements of each job. For instance, describe how long you were expected to stand for and whether walking or lifting was involved. This information helps the SSA determine if you can perform any past work or if your disability qualifies you for SSDI benefits. The thoroughness of your work history report can significantly influence the SSA’s decision. 

Misunderstandings or omissions regarding your work history can lead to a denial of your claim. It’s not just about listing your past jobs; it’s about providing a clear picture of what those jobs entailed. The SSA uses this information to assess whether you can adjust to different work or if your disability limits you from working altogether. If the SSA finds that you can perform “past relevant work,” your claim may be denied. Therefore, it’s essential to illustrate how your disability affects your ability to perform your most recent job and any job you have held in the relevant period.

For older applicants, particularly those over 50, the SSA considers age, work experience, and physical or mental capacity when determining eligibility. Detailed and accurate work history reports strengthen your case by demonstrating how much your disability has affected your ability to work. The SSA also recognizes that retraining to develop skills for a new line of work becomes increasingly difficult as we age. This gets factored into their decision-making process.
